Area communities observed Memorial Day on Monday May 28th with parades, flags, music and recitations.
"The Star Spangled Banner"
Members of the Cherokee Washington High School Band were available to play musical selections at the Memorial Day Program held at the Oak Hill Cemetery on Monday.

Dedicated Brotherhood -
Members of the Cherokee L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) performed color guard duties at the Memorial Day Program held at the Oak Hill Cemetery on Monday.

A poem written by Jim Rolfes of the Wasmer American Legion Post #21 of LeMars was read by Taylor Meyerhofen on May 28th at the Memorial Day Program at the Oakhill Cemetery in Cherokee.

"Gettysburg Address" -
For many years, Jim Staver has performed a reading of the Gettysburg Address at the Memorial Day Program held at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee, and he continued with this tradition in 2012.

"In Flanders Field" -
Young Caleb Claycamp read a portion of "In Flander's Field" at the Oak Hill Cemetery as part of the annual Memorial Day Program. His uncle, Chad Staver, followed with "In Flander's Field - an Answer."

Memorial Address -
Giving the Memorial Day Address at the Memorial Day Program at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee was Matt Johnson, Physical Therapy Director at Cherokee Regional Medical Center. Johnson is also a veteran of the Army who has seen action and loss in Iraq, which made his address very meaningful and heartfelt.

Meaning of the Folds -
Members of Boy Scout Troop 107 of Cherokee presented a demonstration on properly folding the flag while speaking about what each fold means at the Memorial Day Program at the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Girls Scouts of Cherokee placed a wreath at the Memorial Day Program that took place at the Oak Hill Cemetery.

New Flags Dedicated -
Young soldiers were present in full uniform at the Memorial Day Program in Cherokee to assist in the dedication of seven new flags to be added to the rotation of flags displayed each year at the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Members of the Washta American Legion Post #283 are pictured marching at the beginning of the Memorial Day Service held at Grand Meadow Cemetery on Monday. The Legionnaires also participated in a event at the Washta Sunset View Cemetery prior to going to Grand Meadow Cemetery.

A Memorial Day Program was held at Grand Meadow Cemetery those in attendance Remembering the fallen
A Memorial Day Program was held at Grand Meadow Cemetery on May 28th. Those in attendance were provided a patriotic salute and farewell to fallen patriots who are now resting there. Participating in the Memorial Day ceremony were members of the Washta American Legion Post #283 along with guest speaker Deb Bagenstos.
