The Cherokee Elementary and Middle School Special Olympics team recently headed to Sioux Center for the Northwest Iowa district basketball skills tournament. These athletes and coaches headed to this event for the first time and came back full of success. Two athletes will be heading to Iowa City in March for the state tournament. Zach Faist, a third grader at Roosevelt is the son of Curt and Wendy Faist. Zach placed first in his heat to advance to state. Richard Lame, a 5th grader at Cherokee Middle School, is the son of Michelle Carey. Richard also placed first in his heat to earn a trip to state. Other athletes from Cherokee included Ben Nelson, 5th grade student, who earned a 4th place ribbon; Johnathon Stevens, a 4th grader, brought home a red second place ribbon; and Annalie Nelson, a 4th grader, returned home with a ribbon placing 5th in her heat. All athletes participated in the skills competition, which consisted of three events. The first was a 'basketball shout out,' consisting of shooting points from several different areas on the court, second was a timed dribbling event, and finally, a target passing task. All five athletes enjoyed their success as a team, and are anxious to move on to track and field this spring.
