Exchange student has good experience (04/26/07)
Coming to Cherokee from Curitiba, in Brazil, was quite a change for Everson Siegel but he is glad he came. It was a worthwhile experience for the foreign exchange student attending this school year at Washington High School as a senior. There were many cultural differences experienced in coming to rural Iowa from Siegel's home in Curitiba, a city of about 2 million people in southern Brazil...
Tell a Tale of Iowa High Preps (04/26/07)
(Some interesting facts offered to the media by the IHSAA.) The IHSAA has been in existence since 1906. When it was created the membership fee for schools was $2.50 with nominal assessments ranging from one to three dollars for various tournament entry fees. Now 102 years later, what is the cost of a school's membership fee to the IHSAA?...
Cherokee only area school with tennis program (04/26/07)
An unsung and under publicized group of high school athletes are those who play tennis. Cherokee Washington is the only one of the area schools which has a tennis team. The Braves have both boys and girls teams - varsity and junior varsity, and they quite often play the same opponents, on the same day, but with the girls playing at one school's site and the boys on the other school's home court...

Ross Rambles: On being blind - part 2 (04/26/07)
Editor's note: This is the second of a two-part series. Two weeks after my retina surgery, I experienced more symptoms of a detaching retina, black floating specks, light flashes and a black curtain partially covering my vision, this time descending from the top of my vision downward...
Winding Roads: Troubling Times (04/26/07)
There are some blessings to getting old. You can do less and get by with it. You can say what you think and folks just let it go. So here's a few more things I'd like to see changed. We went into this past week hearing more than what we'd like about Imus. He really got himself a lot of free publicity with all kinds of thoughts on the situation. I'm not going there, I used to listen to him for a few moments each day when I drove into work and got a chuckle out of it the majority of time...
Reviewing the decision (04/26/07)
The "no pass, no play" requirement in Iowa for high school students to be eligible to participate in sports has generated numerous complaints. Academic ineligibility has reportedly tripled in the state. The response of the Iowa Board of Education is to appoint a committee to look into the guidelines, but if any changes are made, it won't be until after the 2007-08 school year...
