Symphony concert season begins Sunday (11/29/07)
Renowned Cherokee orchestra entering its 51st season The dates are set for the Cherokee Symphony's 2007-2008 concert season, with three upcoming performances by the talented ochestra sure to treat fans to incomparable musical entertainment. The first concert - the annual Pops Concert - is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday, December 2, at the Cherokee Community Theater. New quilts now decorate barns in Grand Meadow Township (11/29/07)
Several weeks ago, the Grand Meadow Heritage Center kicked up their bragging rights a notch with the addition of a barn quilt, a unique rustic decoration that now adorns the southern side of the Old Barn. CCCB seeking funds for land purchase (11/29/07)
The Cherokee County Conservation Board (CCCB) is raising money to purchase 78.23 acres immediately east of Martin Area County Park, more familiar to most local residents as Martin's Access. According to CCCB Director Ginger Walker, approximately $210,000 is needed to complete the purchase. The land is currently held by the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, a private conservation organization dedicated to protecting Iowa's wild lands...

Memorial services for Loren Steemke, 89, Aurelia, were held Nov. 24, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church in Aurelia with Pastor Harold Werley officiating. A memorial fund has been established. The Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia is in charge of arrangements. Loren died, Nov. 21, 2007, at the Sunset Knoll Care and Rehab Center in Aurelia, where he had been a resident since Feb. 2, 2005...

I don't know about you, but over the last decade or so, retail merchants and advertisers seem to have boosted Hallowe'en - not even an "official" holiday - into a mega-holiday. What was once a kids' holiday, where mothers made their little ones a nice, simple costume to wear to school on October 31 and MAYBE to go to a few homes in the early evening has exploded into grown - up parties where the adults wear costumes, too, and every town seems to have a Haunted House. ...
