100 years ago The Memorial Day program will be observed this day In Cherokee as usual. The program in Charge of G.A.R.---Following is the Program as it Will be Carried Out. 9:00 A.M. The Post will assemble at the G.A.R. Hall. 9:10 A.M. Many staff changes at MMC (05/27/08)
The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn School Board accepted several resignations at their meeting on May 19th, after approving some contracts for the coming school year. All of the classified staff will receive their contracts with the exception of the cooks, as some hours will be cut with the new kitchen on -site. The contracts were for eight aides, six bus drivers, four custodians, and three secretaries...
River Valley girls beat St. Mary's, 4-1 (05/27/08)
CORRECTIONVILLE - Katie Carnes had four hits in as many trips to pace the River Valley softball team to a 4-1 victory over Storm Lake St. Mary's here on May 20th. Alissa Slota and Shelby Chester cracked two hits apiece for the winners, while Wolverine pitcher Jody Peterson allowed just four hits and struck out four in seven innings of work...

REMSEN - The gritty Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn softball team battled back from a four-run deficit with a three-run fourth inning, but fell short after that, falling 4-3 to Remsen St. Mary's here on May 19th. Sephanie Specht suffered the pitching loss for the Eagles, allowing two earned runs on six hits and two walks, with six strikeouts in seven innings of work...

GALVA - The Galva-Holstein Lady Pirates' softball team lost their first game of the year here on May 21 as they fell to Schaller-Crestland, 9-5. G-H Coach Scott Phelps said the team "played well at times and not so well at other times," and was disappointed with the team's inconsistency...
Eagles lose to Hawks in 7th inning (05/27/08)
REMSEN - The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Eagles took a 7-6 lead in the top of the 7th inning in high school baseball season-opening action here on May 19th, but host Remsen St. Mary's Hawks took advantage of "having the last at-bat." The Hawks came through with two runs in their half of the inning to take the War Eagle Conference game by an 8-7 score...
Lady Pirates softball team now 2-0 (05/27/08)
GALVA - The Galva-Holstein softball team improved to 2-0 on the young season with an exciting 4-3 win over Spalding Catholic here on May 20. Both defenses made several good plays and both pitchers threw well in the game, which was won by the home team in the bottom of the 7th inning...
Iowa Sharks devour Wolfpack, 69-0 (05/27/08)
SUTHERLAND - Dave Perrigo scored six touchdowns while rushing for 192 yards to lead the Iowa Sharks to a resounding 69-0 blasting of the Minnesota Valley Wolfpack in Central States Football League (CSFL) action here on May 17th. The Sharks tallied 10 TDs in all, with Perrigo scoring on runs of 21, three, six, 45, 41, and two yards, including the 21-yarder on his team's first play from scrimmage...

The NBA is now down to its version of the "Final Four," so I can finally start to get interested in the league - and this year, I may be more interested than I have been in recent years. If the Boston Celtics (my favorite team) beat the Detroit Pistons, and the L.A. Lakers (my second favorite team) beat the defending champion San Antonio Spurs, we will have the first match-up of the Lakers and Celtics for the title in quite a few years...

Few people in the state understand the difference between the new statewide one-cent sales tax for school infrastructure and the tax it replaced, the School Infrastructure Local Option (SILO) sales tax. Similarities include that facts that SILO was in effect in all 99 counties in Iowa, it raised prices on items subject to sales tax one cent for every dollar spent and the use of the revenue was restricted to school infrastructure, equipment or (as in the case of the Cherokee District) paying off bond debt which lowers the overall property tax in the district.. ...

A solemn observance (05/27/08)
Memorial Day is a solemn occasion but it can also be a time for family togetherness. Originally it was simply a time to put flowers on the graves of deceased veterans and called Decoration Day. State by state, the day of May 30 became a day for not only decorating graves but also for ceremonies of observance for the deceased...
