Jazz & Blues Festival to feature new acts and locations for 2009 (12/17/08)
The schedule for the 2009 Cherokee Jazz and Blues Festival was recently announced. Starting on Friday, Jan. 2 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. the Northwest Iowa Musicians will be kicking off the festival by playing at The Copper Cup. The Pub Crawls will from 9 p.m. ...
Gehlen nicks MMC boys in OT (12/17/08)
MARCUS - Le Mars Gehlen overcame a 10-point deficit late in the game after two Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn starters and leading scorers fouled out, and went on to a 65-59 overtime victory in War Eagle Conference boys basketball action here on Dec. 5th. The host Eagles led 25-15 at halftime and, after Will Hanson fouled out early in the fourth quarter and leading scorer Jordan Boekhout fouled out at the 5:40 mark, the visiting Jays overcame a 10-point deficit and Adam Nemmers tied the game in the closing seconds on a three-pointer, sending the game into overtime with the teams deadlocked at 55-55.. ...
MMC wrestlers split two matches (12/17/08)
ALTA - The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn grapplers opened their season by splitting two matches at Alta recently, defeating Aurelia-Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland 40-33, and falling 43-36 to host Alta. Jacob Lehnhoff (140 pounds) and Jacob Pearson (145) won both of their matches by fall. Jordan Petersen also won by fall for the Eagles...
River Valley boys handle O-A (12/17/08)
CORRECTIONVILLE - The River Valley boys opened Western Valley Conference North basketball action here on Dec. 5, handily disposing of Odebolt-Arthur, 62-44. Zach Hullinger led a balanced scoring attack for the Wolverines with 16 points, while Anthony Volkert added 15, and Austin Hansen 12. Ethan Todd tallied nine points and grabbed six rebounds, and and Volkert added 10 rebounds for a nifty double-double performance...
Eagle wrestlers stomp HWC, 50-12 (12/17/08)
HULL - The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn wrestlers continued to show improvement as the Eagles stomped Hull Western Christian 50-12 in a dual here on Dec. 4. The meet originally included Sibley-Ocheyedan and West Lyon, but was cut back to a dual because of the length of the football season in Lyon County...
SB-L girls too much for Cherokee (12/17/08)
A talented Sergeant Bluff-Luton girls basketball squad broke loose from a well-contested halftime lead of 28-21 on the way to a 55-45 conquest of Cherokee in Cherokee on Dec. 6th. The non-conference tussle saw the Warriors erupt with a 21-8 scoring tear in the pivotal third quarter to ice the game. SIOUX RAPIDS - It was a long night for the Aurelia High School varsity basketball teams when they took on the talented Sioux Central squads in Northwest Conference basketball action here on Dec. 5th. The Bulldog girls opened things up by falling to the Rebels by a 58-24 score. Coach Tim Galvin's Bulldogs trailed by a single point, 9-8 at the end of the first quarter, but were outscored 28-8 in the second stanza, on the way to the final outcome...
Gray Matters: Christmas memories (12/17/08)
In this Season of Advent 2008 it has occurred to me that there might be a hidden benefit in the difficult economic times we're going through. Could it be that in these circumstances we may concentrate less on material things and more heavily on spiritual matters as we prepare to celebrate our Savior's birth? In that light I was reminded of a story I shared with you in a Gray Matter some years ago, so I've decided to repeat it here...
Christmas Parade simply wonderful (12/17/08)
We stand and applaud all the hearty, creative souls who participated in Cherokee's "Wonderful World of Christmas Parade" on Dec. 4th in beautiful Downtown Cherokee. With freezing temperatures hovering in the low teens and a brisk north wind, the 10th annual Parade still attracted 38 beautiful lighted floats and/or vehicles (and some colorful participants!), along with hundreds of appreciative onlookers to Downtown Cherokee's designated Entertainment & Cultural District...
