Cleghorn Ice Cream Day is Saturday, June 13 (06/03/09)
CLEGHORN - On Saturday, June 13 the fourth annual Cleghorn Ice Cream Day will be held. Festivities will begin at 4 p.m., with kids games, bingo, quack crap bingo, chuck-a-luck, and kids train rides, dunking booth, cakewalk and much more. The American Legion Auxiliary will serve pie at the center, and with every piece of pie purchased, your name will be entered in a drawing for a $25 cash prize ,to be awarded later in the evening...
Cherokee Farmers Market starts today (06/03/09)
Starting today, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the Cherokee Farmers' Market at the historic Cherokee Railroad Depot will be starting it's sixth year. The market will be open every Thursday through Sept. 24. Jim Adamson, an organizer of the popular event, reports that vendors have been lined up for Thursday including vendors who have the training and certification needed to accept coupons provided to senior citizens through a state program...
Special Olympics Iowa held in Ames (06/03/09)
AMES - Special Olympics Iowa is a nonprofit organization serving Iowans with intellectual disabilities since 1968. SOIA serves athletes in each of Iowa's 99 counties, and provides training and competitions in 22 Olympic-type sports. WATERLOO - Cherokee's two qualifiers in the 2009 Class 1A State Tennis Meet here last week failed to place in the rugged State competition, with Cherokee's #1 qualifier, Grego Pritzlaff, finishing 1-2 in singles matches at State. Cherokee's Cole Egger, who played #1 for the Braves the past two seasons and was upended in the Districts by Cherokee's #2 man this year in Pritzlaff, qualified for State at #2 singles and dropped both of his competitive matches...
Young WHS softball team goes 1-2 (06/03/09)
The youthful Cherokee Washington High softball team won one of three games to open the 2009 season, falling 18-8 at Sioux City West, defeating Pocahontas Area 13-9 in Cherokee last week, and falling 27-8 to Spencer here Monday night. Kelsey Ludwig took the pitching loss at Sioux City West, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits and three walks, with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of work. Autumn Shafer pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up eight runs on six hits and one walk, with one strikeout...

CORRECTIONVILLE - The River Valley Wolverines lost a Western Valley Conference baseball game to Odebolt-Arthur here on Tuesday, falling by a 10-0 score in five innings. RV coach Eric Goettsch said, "We just keep giving teams 4-6 outs an inning, and that is not going to get the job done. The #1 ranked Cherokee Braves baseball team racked up three more impressive wins of late to run their shiny season record to 4-0 and retain a firm grip on the State's Class 2A rating. Bulldog baseball squad loses to R-A (06/03/09)
AURELIA - The Aurelia Bulldogs suffered a one-sided loss to Ruthven-Ayrshire Friday night at Aurelia, falling to the Raiders, 22-1, in non-conference baseball action. Aurelia coach Bob Mikos was disappointed in his team's play, citing the team's "lack of focus, lackluster play and lack of enthusiasm." Mikos did mention a few bright spots, too, including Evan Larson's 1-2 batting performance, Kody Pinkerton's "outstanding job behind the plate," and Colton Ballantyne, who was "solid at first base.". ...
