Countdown to Heritage Days (08/31/09)
- With Heritage Days rapidly approaching, the Grand Meadow Heritage Center has been a beehive of activity as board members and other volunteers work up a lather in preparation for the event. Correctionville anglers host fishing marathon season finale (08/31/09)
CORRECTIONVILLE - On August 22, our area's avid anglers and dedicated bait dunkers once again took rods, reels and nightcrawler cans in hand and headed on down to the Little Sioux River for one last all-night catfish marathon of the summer. Because of the great fishing this summer, the members of the Correctionville Little Sioux Fishing Club decided to close out the season with a bonus fish-out contest...a finny finale, you might say...

Invasive Plant found at Mill Creek Lake (08/31/09)
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has confirmed the presence of Eurasian watermilfoil, an invasive aquatic plant, at Mill Creek Lake in O'Brien County. "Preventing the spread of Eurasian watermilfoil to other lakes is the key here now," said Kim Bogenschutz, the DNR's Aquatic Invasive Species Program Coordinator, "This plant is easily spread between water bodies."Eurasian watermilfoil can spread through fragmentation.It only takes small fragments of the plant to start an infestation at another lake. ...

Braves get Tornadoes, 28-22! (08/31/09)
Cherokee's gritty Braves refused to lose in their 2009 football opener here Friday night, staying the course on the way to an exicitng 28-22 win over Lakes Conference rival Storm Lake in non-district action. Speedy Cherokee senior Nick Parker was instrumental in the victory, scoring the winning touchdown on a six-yard pass from senior quarterback Matt Pitts, and then intercepting a Storm Lake quarterback Bobby Brown pass inside of two minutes left to play to seal the deal...
GHSC cross country girls place 4th (08/31/09)
SPENCER - The Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland cross country teams fared well at last week's Spencer Invitational, with the girls placing fourth in the rugged field, and the boys eighth. HOLSTEIN - The Galva-Holstein Lady Pirates volleyball team got its 2009 season off in a big way, sweeping Kingsley-Pierson 3-0 here Thursday night by game scores of 25-21, 25-17, 25-13. As a team, the Pirates were 50-63 hitting with 27 kills, 61-67 serving for 91 percent and 17 aces, totaling 27 team assists, 15 team digs, and five team blocks...
