Meriden woman is November's featured artist (11/05/09)
Cathy Reed, this month's featured artist at the Cherokee Sanford Museum, is a busy woman. She works as a teacher's associate at Head Start in Cherokee and teaches painting to a small group in Adult Education at the Cherokee Middle School one evening a week. And, oh yeah, she also also has become an accomplished artist herself in her "spare time."...
Few surprises in 2009 City elections (11/05/09)
There were few surprises in Tuesday's City Elections in Cherokee County, with less than 10-percent of eligible Cherokee voters making their way to the polls. Just 337 total votes were cast in Cherokee for the Mayor's race, where unopposed newcomer Mark Murphy gleaned 291 votes. Out-going Mayor Pam Pierce, who was appointed to the post a year ago and had declined to seek election, received 29 write-in votes, along with 17 other scattered write-in votes...
Cherokee District faces $129,200 mid-year cuts (11/05/09)
Based on the recommendation of Superintendent Dr. John Chalstrom, the Cherokee School District will make mid-year reductions totaling $129,200 in an effort to counter a portion of Iowa Governor Chet Culver's 10-percent across-the-board (ATB) State budget cuts that ended up costing the Cherokee District $492,000 less state aid revenue...
