Donations for Those in Need (11/17/10)
Dr. Travis Jewett, left, and Dr. Thomas Irwin, right, present Mid-Sioux Director Joan Forcier with a check for $687 from the November 3 "Food for the Needy Day" at both Jewett Chiropractic and Irwin Family Chiropractic. Forcier thanked the two businesses for their contribution, which she said will go into her agency's Crisis Fund. Several food donations for Mid-Sioux were also received that day. Officer Dixson graduates from WITCC Law Enforcement Academy (11/17/10)
Alisa Dixson, who is currently serving as an officer with the Cherokee Police Department, graduated from the Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City on November 5, 2010. Dixson, also a graduate of Buena Vista University, is a member of the 13th group of police officers to graduate from WITCC's Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy. ...
Museum's Rock & Roll program rescheduled (11/17/10)
Due to inclement weather that Northwest Iowa experienced over the past weekend, the Cherokee Sanford Museum Association postponed its "Juke Boxes, Pool Halls and Ducktails" with Layton Zbornick and rescheduled it to Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. Zbornick wrote and recorded Iowa's first Rock & Roll record, titled "Janet." He was inducted into Iowa's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. ...
U.S. Hwy. 59 closed in Cherokee (11/17/10)
Cherokee City Administrator Don Eikmeier has announced that due to emergency storm sewer repair, U.S. Highway 59 will be closed in Cherokee, with work on the project starting today. The Iowa Department of Transportation set up the barricades and closed the highway at its intersection with Cedar Street near downtown Cherokee Tuesday afternoon...
Cherokee cage fight will be a 'dry' event (11/17/10)
A mixed martial arts cage fighting event approved last week by the City Council for the Cherokee Community Center will not involve the sale or availability of alcohol, after all. A misunderstanding between the promoter, the City, and the Cherokee VFW Club led City Administrator Don Eikmeier and promoter Rick Tasler of Brutaal Genesis of Boone to announce that the Cherokee VFW Club would utilize its liquor permit the night of the event and would close the VFW Club during the event to allow the license to be used at the Community Center, and then re-open to host the after party associated with such cage fighting events.. ...

Letsche Memorial Hunting Tournament (11/17/10)

Last month, the Cherokee Arts Council, along with the Cherokee Sanford Museum, began a unique fundraiser to benefit the Cherokee Arts Council. Several volunteers and local artisans, myself included, painted several Barn Quilt Blocks that have been on exhibit in the Museum's West Gallery. What makes this exhibit unique is that the public can bid on these Barn Quilt Blocks and the proceeds for this silent auction will go toward future Art Council projects...
