Cherokee Flight Breakfast scheduled Sunday (05/09/11)
One of Cherokee's most popular traditions is the annual Flight Breakfast held at the Cherokee Airport.This year the event is bigger and better than ever. Not only will the breakfast feature great food, including pancakes, eggs, sausage and a beverage and plenty of airplanes, but the event is now being changed to what organizers are calling "Wings and Wheels Breakfast" and will include not just an airplane show but automobiles, motorcycles, tractors and a helicopter, plus airplane rides for $20, weather permitting.. ...
Disaster declaration for six Iowa counties (05/09/11)
Washington D.C. -- President Barack Obama has issued a disaster declaration for six western Iowa counties damaged by tornadoes and other severe storms last month. Republican Sen. Charles Grassley, Democrat Sen. Tom Harkin and Republican Congressman Steve King all issued statements Thursday saying that the declaration triggers the release of Federal Emergency Management Agency funds to help Iowa recover from the storms on April 9-10...
Supervisors hold weekly meeting (05/09/11)
The Cherokee County Board of Supervisors met Tuesday at the Cherokee County Courthouse for its regular meeting. Chairman Jeff Simonsen was absent, so Vice-Chairman Dean Schmidt opened the meeting. Cherokee County Human Resources Director Kristi Petersen was first to address the Board. She brought a Step Wage Authorization to the Board for their approval for Keva Wolf, a jailer at the Cherokee County Law Enforcement Center. Wolf will be making $14.35 per hour...
CYSBA fund-raiser to improve ball fields road (05/09/11)
The Cherokee Youth Summer Ball Association (CYSBA) has organized a special fund drive to repair and extend the treacherous roadway servicing the CYSBA ball fields and Cherokee School District tennis courts off East Indian Street. CYSBA officials, who's been concerned with the roadway hazards for several years, have met with the School District and Board of Education, and the City of Cherokee, and received approval to proceed with a project that would extend the narrow south to north road accessing the ball fields to exit east onto North Roosevelt Ave. ...
'Family Fun Day' for CYSBA Saturday (05/09/11)
A Family Fun Day has been organized for Saturday by the Cherokee Youth Summer Ball Association (CYSBA) at the CYSBA ball fields in the Sam Doupe Complex off East Indian Street. A special "Ball Olympics" is scheduled for 1-5 p.m., including seven entertaining and fun events for all ages. Cost is $25 per family/team. For $5 per person, a Tasty Feast will be served at 5 p.m. of pulled pork sandwiches or hot dog, chips, baked beans, bars, and drink...
Transition Day at Alta, Aurelia (05/09/11)

Roosevelt track meet (05/09/11)
Jim Leonard planned a track meet for the Kindergarten classes at Roosevelt School recently. There were 10 events for each child to participate in. Many parents volunteered to help run the events. Summer lunch program a go (05/09/11)
Students in Cherokee will once again be able to receive a hot school lunch during the summer. Free meals will be served daily from June 8 until July 22 (with the exception of July 1, 4 and 5) at Roosevelt Elementary School. Students age 18 and younger qualify for this free program. Parents are allowed to eat with their children for $3.50 per meal. Meals will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Roosevelt building located at 929 North Roosevelt...

LAURENS - The Northwest Conference Co-Ed Track and Field meet was held here last week, and the athletes from Alta-Aurelia did well in both boys and girls competitions.
