NICC bond issue fails for third time (02/09/12)
On Tuesday, 134 Cherokee County residents in the communities of Marcus, Meriden, and Cleghorn went to the polls to determine the fate of a public measure during a special election. For the third time in the last year and a half, Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon once again tried and failed to get a public measure approved by voters in its school district that states: Shall the Board of Directors of NICC in the counties of Cherokee, Clay, Dickinson, Lyon, O'Brien, Osceola, Plymouth and Sioux be authorized to erect, equip, renovate and expand buildings for community college student learning purposes, including construction of new buildings, expansion and/or renovation of existing buildings and student support areas, upgrading mechanical and advance technology systems, contract indebtedness therefore, and issue its school bonds in an amount not exceeding $13,400,000 for those purposes?. ...

EMMETSBURG - An improved Cherokee Washington High girls basketball team outscored Emmetsburg 10-2 in the final three minutes to win their third game in a row with a tense 47-44 Lakes Conference victory over a good E-Hawk team here Tuesday night. Cherokee led 25-21 after a steady first half, but then turned the ball over in the third quarter as Emmetsburg went on a 13-4 scoring run to post a 34-29 lead heading into the final eight minutes. ...

The River Valley boys battled back from a 12-point deficit in the first half to claim a 47-40 victory over Whiting in the Western Valley Conference Tournament in Monday action.
