'The Dust Bowl' by Ken Burns is a companion to his new PBS series. The pictures and personal narratives are riveting. As I turned the pages, I developed a new appreciation for Mother Nature and for the people and communities that lived through that terrible experience...

The month-long event helps fund their organization's projects, which include sending girls to camp and yearly scholarships for graduating area seniors. Roberta (Bobbi) Marie Linn, 78, of rural Correctionville, died from heart failure on Sunday, November 25, 2012, surrounded by her family. Members of the Cherokee Yacht Club Committee proudly display the fact that they reached and surpassed their goal of $400,000 for the new Koser Spring Lake Park Yacht Club, which is currently under construction. Donations are still coming in and it is not too late to take ownership in this project! Landfill to close on Saturdays

Cherokee Sanitary Landfill has announced that they will remain open on Saturday Dec. 1 and Dec. 15. After those dates, the Landfill will be closed on Saturdays until April of 2013. The landfill also announced that after the holidays, the public can bring out their real Christmas trees as yard waste at no cost...

County Legacy applications available

The Cherokee County Legacy Foundation has received $94,468.98 from the County Endowment Fund to be granted to local organizations for 2013. Grant applications may be picked up at the Iowa State Extension Office starting on Monday, Dec. 3.
