At last week's Cherokee City Council meeting, City Administrator Don Eikmeier reported on the May 27-28 Memorial Day flood event in Cherokee that swamped the Railroad Creek vicinity and the Little Sioux River with record levels: Flash flooding on Railroad Creek was worse than in 2010; the Little Sioux River crested at approximately 28.5' on May 27; City employees, volunteer firemen, and police officers evacuated campers and assisted in the rescue of flood victims; street crews placed barricades and began emergency pumping of sewer manholes; the pumps at the Beech Street lift station were operating at full capacity throughout the flooding event; sandbags and sand were made available to residents; and 197 properties reported some type of damage.. ...
