As newly-elected school board members are being sworn in this month, we would be remiss if we didn't pause to recognize all of our area school board members who serve so diligently and unselfishly. Our volunteer school board members spend thousands of hours each year doing everything from hashing out budgets and making sometimes unpopular decisions to keep those budgets in line, to advocating for new programs in order to ensure every Iowa student receives an excellent education, the likes of which is valued and envied throughout the country.. ...

I just paid a big bill for the Cherokee Public Library. Although that's not unusual, I want to highlight this expenditure. It's for a gigantic database, EBSCO, which is intended to help all the residents of Cherokee County. We provide access to it through a contract with the State Library of Iowa and use county funding to cover the cost. ...
