Derailed train spills crude oil (Local News ~ 06/27/18)
DOON , Iowa - A train derailment spilled 230,000 gallons of crude oil into an already-flooded Iowa river Friday, endangering area residents and downstream drinking water. Thirty-two cars of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) train derailed, 14 of which leaked crude oil into the Rock River in Doon. Little Sioux River flood update (Local News ~ 06/27/18)
The National Weather Service Tuesday reported that the Little Sioux River level is predicted to crest past 24 feet Thursday in the Cherokee area, categorizing the development as a major flood. The heavy rain predicted for overnight Tuesday that would further impact Cherokee’s flood waters was predicted to go south of the City, adding further water woes in the Corrctionville vicinity... -

The Cherokee Braves baseball team had a packed schedule at the end of last week with two games on Friday and another two games on Saturday. Three of the four games were part of the Spalding Catholic Invitational and the other game was a conference game... -
Cherokee girls win 2 of 3 (High School Sports ~ 06/27/18)
In a rescheduled game, the Cherokee softball team played an early game on Friday afternoon against Spirit Lake. The Braves held the lead the entire game but timely hits for the Indians in the 7th inning gave Spirit Lake the victory, 5-4. With two outs in the top of the first inning, Teagan Slaughter drew a walk and Kassidy Pingel singled, Sarah Kach was hit by a pitch and Teagan Slaughter scored on a passed ball for the Braves to take a 1-0 lead. The Braves scored again in the fifth inning when Kach was again hit by a pitch and JeMae Nichols doubled and Alexus Jones singled to score Kach and Nichols. In the 6th inning, Teagan Slaughter hit a home run for the Braves to take a 4-1 lead, but in the bottom half of the 7th inning, the Indians strung together four hits and two fielder’s choices to score the necessary runs to win the game. . ... -

Taking the loss for the Raptors was Katie Brinkman, who threw four innings, allowing nine earned runs on nine hits, walking two.
