DENISON - The Cherokee Washington High girls traveled to Denison Saturday night with only one opponent in the way of their second consecutive trip to the Class 3A State Basketball Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The Braves easily defeated a talented 22-1 Shenandoah team that had won 13 consecutive games coming into the Regional final. DES MOINES - Several wrestlers from the Chronicle Times coverage area competed Thursday on the first day of the 2017 State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena. Cherokee’s Matt Stines (39-10) won his opening match against Washington’s Austin Hazelett at 145 pounds, posting a 4-3 decision. Raptors’ hoops season comes to an end (02/20/17)
The Ridge View boys basketball team saw their season come to an end Thursday in the second round of District Tournament play as the Raptors fell to Gehlen Catholic of LeMars, 66-46. Ridge View Coach Dale Tokheim said he was real happy with this team’s effort and attitude, but commented that they couldn't get some shots to fall at critical times.  He added that they didn't handle some pressure at the end of the first half and the beginning of the 3rd quarter “and they made us pay.”...

The Cherokee Washington High girls opened Class 3A Regionl Tournament play with an 80-17 thrashing of (4-17) Southeast Valley-Gowrie Saturday on their home floor. The Braves got right to work on defense causing Southeast Valley to turn the ball over repeatedly and opened the game with an insurmountable 21-0 scoring run in their favor. The Alta-Aurelia varsity basketball girls saw their season come to an end Saturday when the Warriors fell to Hinton (9-13) , 50-43, in opening round tournament play.
