The climate is blah, the NFL season is over, an Iowa blizzard can descend on us on short notice and it's still several weeks until the Easter holiday season with all the accompanying perks...like chocolate rabbits.
Luckily, though, over at the northwest section of the county, the season is celebrated with a bit of a pre-Lent lark as the folks give three cheers and a couple of late winter shivers for Austin Whited as he steps forward for the honors as MMC's February Reader of the Month.
Every school day morning finds this young reader answering the roll call in his second grade classroom at Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Elementary.
Although he is an equal opportunity scholar who enjoys all of his subjects, Austin does admit to a bit of prejudice when he considers Mrs. Chapman way ahead of the pack as far as his favorite teachers are concerned.
Austin is a reader who loves being on both sides of a book. He enjoys both reading and listening to stories read by Librarian Mavis Diment.
As far as his own reading tastes are concerned, Austin, a self-professed sportsfan, never passes up an opportunity to peruse a book about baseball.
It should not be surprising to discover that Austin's attraction to America's favorite pastime also carries over into his leisure time. After all, everyone knows he never passes up an opportunity to take a couple of cuts with his Louisville Slugger or to toss the old horsehide around in a good game of baseball.
As far as his future is concerned, Austin avers that he's not making any long term plans. Right now he's content to just work on at perfecting his skills out on the baseball diamond.
Until he's ready to pitch that no-hitter, Austin Whited can be found over on 500th Street near Marcus where he shares home plate with his folks...David and Becky, his kid brothers...four-year-old Tyler and six-month-old Branden, his cat Frickles, one dog named Copper and two horses...Thurston and Blade.
