In their meeting of Feb. 15, the members of the Kiwanis Club of Cherokee recognized their February High School Kiwanis Student of the Month, Chris Johnson.

Johnson is the son of Pete and Deb Johnson. Along with academic achievement at Washington High School, Johnson is active in school organizations and activity programs. Honors include membership in the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and Academic Honor Roll. He participates in Drug Free Lifestyles, Spanish Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, football and golf. He is a senior representative on the WHS Student Council. He is a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. Johnson believes communities would realize greater benefits, if schools received more funding to avoid budget cuts.

Johnson plans to attend Iowa State University, with a major emphasis in business and finance.

Students selected for the "Kiwanis Student of the Month" Award must demonstrate good academic effort, attend school regularly, and be considerate of others. The purpose of the recognition is to support students who show good potential as future leaders and will work for the betterment of communities through service to others.
