Well, another page has fallen away from the old calendar with a couple of clatters and a shiver or two, noting that we are indeed approaching late winter.
Even though spring is still a ways down the pike, sagging mid-winter spirits are on the receiving end of a much needed recharge with the warming news that Kyle Schmidt has been awarded the mantle as the Cleghorn Library's February Reader of the Month.
During the school day, Kyle can be found studying his way through all those subjects thrown his way in his seventh grade classroom at Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Middle School.
Reading, this seventh grade scholar notes, is his top subject. He also gives Mrs. Nielsen straight "A's" when it comes to grading his favorite teachers.
Kyle considers the Cleghorn library a pretty good location in which to chill out and get in some quality reading time.
He especially enjoys the selection of magazines found there and in addition, never passes up the opportunity to fire up one of the library's computers.
As far as his own preferred reading list is concerned, this reader enjoys tales about horsepower...from the four-legged kind to race cars.
A true motorhead, Kyle's choice in reading material also carries over into his favorite hobbies.
He avers that he loves nothing better than fiddling around with anything that has a motor.
With this in mind, it should come as no surprise that he is anxiously awaiting that red letter day when he receives that all important symbol of a young man's Rite of Passage, namely the driver's license, and gets some wheels of his own.
As far as his future plans are concerned, Kyle Schmidt hopes to one day become a gear-jamming, free-wheeling semi driver...just like is dad.
Until the day arrives for him to hit the passing lane, however, Kyle can be found in rural Marcus. His parents are Kay Schmidt and Kenneth Schmidt and his siblings are 17-year-old Jimmy, 15-year-old Kirk and 12-year-old Kendra.
