MMC summer work bids approved

Plans for summer work in the Marcus-Meriden-C leghorn School District are laid out and bids for some of the work were approved at last week's MMC School Board meeting.

The Cleghorn gymnasium will receive a face lift this summer with the floor being refinished and base molding installed. The contract was awarded to Randy Jeltma for $7,440 to refinish the floor and an additional $1,420 for installation of the base molding. Jeff Schmillen was awarded the bid to paint the gym walls for $2,669.95.

The locker room floors at the high school and in Cleghorn, along with the kindergarten room in the primary building, will get a coat of epoxy from Mark's Epoxy Floors at a total cost of $12, 479.95.

There was discussion about the bids received on the locker room lockers at the high school, in addition to new bleachers at the Cleghorn gym. It was decided to investigate other options due to the lack of bids and the rather high cost.

Contracts were approved, with Carla Weber being named as Head Volleyball Coach. The contract for Head Boys Basketball Coach and Science Teacher was approved for Alan Vasher. The board also approved the resignation of Leo Hupke as Head Football Coach.

Driver Education fees were raised due to the rising cost of gasoline. MMC students will now pay $160 for driver's education and out-of-district students can expect to pay $200 for the 2005-06 school year.

A budget hearing date for the district was set for Tuesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. in the ICN room of the high school.

The board also approved the budget guarantee resolution for the 2005-06 school year budget. The district will levy for $114,400 to recover 80 percent of the money lost from the previous year's per-pupil funding for the general budget because of declining enrollment.

This funding guarantee, allowed by Iowa law, is being phased out, with 80 percent of the loss being the maximum a district can levy for for the upcoming fiscal year and 90 percent the maximum for the present fiscal year. For the 2006-07 fiscal year, the maximum will be 70 percent.
