Cherokee and Aurelia explore sharing

Wednesday, April 6, 2005

At last week's special meeting of the Cherokee City Council, it was reported that city officials from Cherokee and Aurelia on the possibility of cooperation between the two towns for different services.

Law enforcement was specifically mentioned, with the possibility of the Aurelia chief becoming part of the Cherokee Police Department and the coverage area to include both towns.

However, in response to a question on whether this would eliminate the need to fill a vacancy on the Cherokee Police Department (another one besides the one recently filled by Bryon Kelley), Ron Strickland, city administrator, said that the force needs eight officers to cover Cherokee and by adding additional coverage area, another officer would be needed.

A joint meeting between the Cherokee and Aurelia city council be held but no arrangements have been made.
