Fees increase for sports events

Monday, June 27, 2005

By Ken Ross, Managing Editor

The Cherokee School Board approved an increase in the fees for attending sporting activities, pending approval by boards of other Lake Conference schools, as expected. The price of a student activity ticket will also increase for the upcoming school year.

At a meeting of administrators and activity directors, the recommendation made had been the increase admission from $3 to $4 for students and from $4 to $5 for adults. The admission price had last been increased in 1997.

Marlin Lode, superintendent, said the activity fund is $13,000 in the red. He said football and basketball are the major fund generating activities, subsidizing other activities. Other sports activities generate lesser amounts and some activities generate no revenue.

There is no admission for tennis, golf or middle school sporting events. There are also non-sporting activities for which there is no admission charge.

The price of an activity ticket for students was increased from $20 to $25. The price of a 12-punch ticket for adults will be increased from $36 to $48. This will continue to save the holder $1 per event as the price of an individual ticket increases.

Lode said other conferences are also considering admission increases this year.
