Junior golf scores big in Marcus

Wednesday, July 13, 2005

For a second year a Junior Golf League was organized in Marcus. Organizers Gerri Lynn Specht, Rob Wendt, and Keith Hauschildt organized and offered the league to second through eighth grade students. The Marcus Golf Club offers the course to the league each Friday morning for six weeks.

This year the league had 74 boys and girls who participated in the league. The league involves a small fee that includes a T-shirt, six weeks of golf and some instruction. Parents take turns each week walking with the teams and keeping score. Participants do not need to be members of the golf club and each week teams of four players play a round of four or nine holes of golf. The teams consist of older and younger players, with older ones setting examples and providing leadership.

On Friday, July 1 a free lunch was provided by Guy Hoefling owner of Uncle Albert's Restaurant in Le Mars as part of a celebration and awards day. The event for the week was a Best Shot Tournament and a semi-final awards program. Awards and prizes were given for first through fifth place teams, most improved players, longest drives, best putts and more.

The league was fun for all players and provided something different for them to do during the summer. Golf is a great sport for all ages, shapes and sizes because participants compete to beat and improve their own scores as well as be a part of a team.
