The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals has issued a $3,000 fine against Country Side Estates in Cherokee as the result of a male resident who allegedly had inappropriate physical contact with two non-consenting females.
Garry Parry, administrator at Country Side Estates, said a problem resulted after a male resident and a female resident started a consensual relationship and subsequently, the male resident was involved in kissing and inappropriate touching with two other female residents.
When this became known, Country Side Estates intervened but the Department of Inspection and Appeals did not regard the intervention as strong enough, according to Parry.
He said that following the citation, stronger intervention was taken, including regular monitoring. Parry said he believes that a report to the department regarding the present situation will result in a finding of compliance.
Parry noted that a report had referred to the male resident involved as someone who had a prior conviction in Nebraska for sexual assault with a minor. However, the resident was on no sexual offender list in Iowa nor in Nebraska and state officials contacted in Nebraska came up with no record of a sex crime for the person.
"What we'd like to emphasize is that the residents here are happy, safe and secure," Parry said.
