Dan Buckley, originally from Chicago, has began his quest to do something for others in South Carolina. He didn't know much about cancer, even when people he knew had died from the disease. For some reason he decided he would learn more about it and when he did, he was motivated to try and help any way he could. He had never really done anything to help people before and felt it was time.
Originally he had planned to walk with his fellow church members in South Carolina in the Relay for Life event. Business circumstances caused him to leave the town before the event took place, but he felt he had to do something. After some meditation on what to do, Buckley decided he would ride his bicycle from South Carolina to Oregon to raise awareness and funding for the American Cancer Society.
His journey has recently brought him to Cherokee where he stayed for the night before going to Orange City for a pre-arranged appointment. Then he is going to participate in RAGBRAI on behalf of Relay for Life. It seems like the long way around but his goal is to bring awareness and emotional healing to people along the way. He has met an abundance of people and is keeping a journal of his adventure.
He encourages people to get out and do something for someone else, "you don't have to ride, you can walk, and if you can't walk help set up for your local Relay for Life event." He also says people can and should educate themselves about cancer by calling the American Cancer Society. Those wishing to donate can send donations to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. To help him track his efforts, those donations can be noted with his name, Dan Buckley.
