When the members of the Full Draw Archery Club in Cherokee began planning for their first annual outdoor tournament they had no idea how successful it would be. They spent a great deal of time acquiring the 3-D targets and organizing the event, which took place this past Sunday in Cherokee.
Bruce Johnson, President of the club said it was an excellent turnout. Members estimated that any number over 75 would be awesome and 100 would be their goal. They happily exceeded both numbers when 121 archers arrived to participate in the tournament.
Johnson also said the tournament went very well for being the first 3-D tournament the club has hosted. He and others would match the quality of the tournament to any other 3-D event in the area.
The club also learned and notice things which they plan to improve on for next year. They gained a lot of experience as a club of what they need to do to increase numbers for the tournament next year.
The event was so successful, the Full Draw Archery Club plans to host two 3-D tournaments next year. Two are now in the planning stages for June and August 2006. Several of the archers asked if the club was going to offer another tournament later this fall because they enjoyed it so much. With responses like that to this tournament, members of the club are ready to offer better and bigger tournaments next year.
Overall, those who participated in the tournament were very pleased with the quality of the targets and several commented on the beauty of the land that comprised the course. Johnson said he received several emails the next day from some well-respected veteran archers whose comments included big thumbs up.
Johnson was not only pleased with the 121 shooters who turned out for the first time event but he was also delighted that shooters from Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota took the time to come and participate in the event.
Awards are given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place if there were 10 or more in a class. If there were less than five in a class, only 1st place was awarded and if there were less than 10, 1st and 2nd places are awarded. In the cub class all participants win awards. The cub class enjoyed an excellent turn out of 12 children between the ages of four and eleven including three girls.
The Full Draw Archery Club is looking forward to making improvements and drawing in larger numbers of archers next year.
