School board reorganizes

Monday, September 26, 2005

By Ken Ross, Managing editor

The Cherokee School Board had its annual organizational meeting following the report on the election and the retirement of the old board on Monday.

Laurie Gerstandt, the board president, did not seek reelection at the conclusion of her second term. She expressed mixed feelings, saying she felt some relief but she will experience some withdrawal from her involvement on the school board.

"It's been a pleasure, mainly because of the people in this room," Gerstandt said.

The withdrawal will be alleviated somewhat by remaining involved in school activities.

Kirk Sampson, who was reelected to his second term, and Deb Johnson, who is new to the board, were sworn in.

Laura Dawson was elected board president, and Kirk Ebel will continue in the position of vice president.

Central Bank and Cherokee State Bank were named official depositories.

The monthly meetings will continue to be on the third Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m. The management team (school board members and administrators) meeting which has met monthly during the school year will meet only every month at the suggestion of the superintendent, John Chalstrom.

The management team meetings will be longer when held only every other month.

Committee appointments are:

Curriculum and Instruction - Kirk Ebel and Deb Johnson

Policy - Kirk Sampson and Terri Weaver

Finance - Laura Dawson and Kirk Ebel

Buildings, Grounds, Capital - Terri Weaver and Laura Dawson

Transportation, Nutrition - Deb Johnson and Kirk Sampson
