Cherokee is not usually a stop for international travelers but two men from Finland recently stopped shortly, having a meal in Carey's Restaurant.
Jari Kukkonen and Christer Thibblin have been planning a motorcycle trip in the U.S. for more than two years. Originally, there were four planning the trip from Finland but only the two were able to make it.
They are both electrical engineers and both have been in the U.S. numerous times on business related trips. Thibblin has toured the U.S. before on a trip for pleasure but this is the first non-business trip to America for Kukkonen.
They rented Harley Davidson motorcycles and set out from Chicago, went to northern Texas and are headed back to Chicago. They decided to follow the internationally famous Route 66 for part of their trip.
"Riding motorcycles is the best way to see the U.S. You can talk to people more easily than when you stay in a car," Kukkonen said.
When asked whether the trip has been worthwhile, they both answered "absolutely."
