The city of Cherokee has boards and commissions that affect the community but most citizens have little awareness of. Those who serve on these boards and commissions are appointed by the Cherokee City Council, usually at the recommendation of the chairman.
The city council recently decided to make the appointment process more publicized in order to promote the idea of citizen participation in city government.
People interested in serving on these public bodies are asked to drop off a letter to the chairman of the commission or board at the Cherokee City Hall where it will be forwarded to the appropriate chairman. Going through city hall will serve as notice to the city officials that the person is interested in the position.
Three of the decision making bodies have terms expiring at the end of December. People interested in those positions are asked to submit a letter by Dec. 14.
The Planning and Zoning Commission has two, three-year terms expiring on Dec. 31, those currently held by Charles Letsche and Steve Fassler. The commission is chaired by Ramona Nitz.
The Historic Preservation Commission has three, three-year terms expiring on Dec. 31, those currently held by Mick Samsel, Dwight Varce and Dee Gee Blair. The commission is chaired by Jim Adamson.
The Cherokee Aviation Board has one two-year term expiring on Dec. 31, currently held by Mike Fox. The board is chaired by Kent Wenck.
There will be three positions on the Cherokee Library Board up for appointment in June and one position up for appointment on the Cherokee Board of adjustment in September. The library board is chaired by Jomi Anderson and the board of adjustment is chaired by Gene Streeter.
