Our Opinion: Watch for scams

Monday, February 27, 2006

Warmer weather is hopefully just around the corner. Along with the many welcome signs of spring, there are unwelcome arrivals.

Scam artists looking for a quick buck often go door to door trying to take advantage of trusting people, particularly the elderly. They offer to do yard work or work on the house then don't deliver on the promise after money is obtained, or claim they have done more than they really have before demanding payment.

Some may request to be allowed in the home for some kind of inspection, posing danger of not only a scam but direct theft.

People should not contract with anyone who doesn't have a local business address that can be contacted.

People should not allow strangers who come to the door into their homes. If this occurs, the police department or sheriff's department should be contacted.
