The Cherokee Fire Department was called at 9:01 p.m. Tuesday night, just as the City Council meeting came to a close, to a fire at 1708 Borderline Drive just south of Cherokee.

Upon arrival the fire fighters discovered a large quonset building engulfed in flames. The building, owned by Filmore Gustafson, was full of hay.

The Meriden and Aurelia fire departments were called in with their tankers to provide additional water and manpower. Lundell construction also provided assistance with a backhoe and frontloader to remove the hay from the building while firemen fought the blaze. The Cherokee Regional Hospital EMS was also on hand in case of injuries.

The fire was brought under control at about 3:35 a.m. Wednesday morning. No one was injured in the fire. The hay and building was a total loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
