The Family Aquatic Center/Gillette Park Development Committee has decided to seek final council approval for the project at the April 25 Cherokee City Council meeting. The objective had earlier been to make that presentation at the meeting of April 11.
"The many aspects of the aquatic center, the trails, the playground, the Centennial Shelter and the outdoor performance area have been the subject of evaluation through the winter and spring. A number of improvements have been suggested and included, all of which impact the time needed for completion of final bid specifications," said John Cook, co-chair of the project committee. "It became clear that council approval at the meeting of the 11th would be followed by a number of modifications to include those last important details, which is something we found it important to avoid."
Project committee plans are to submit the final design detail for council approval on the 25th of April, then proceed with the bid process, bids to be submitted about one month later. "Our goal was and still is for construction to begin in June," said Cook. This does not affect our plan to open the aquatic center in early June of 2007.
