On a 4 to 1 vote, the Cherokee City Council has affirmed a decision made last month to terminate Diane Cargin, who served as the deputy clerk/treasurer.
The original termination was done by Ron Strickland, city administrator, after consultation with individual council members on an informal basis (not at a meeting at which a quorum of council members were present).
The matter was put on the agenda for the Tuesday city council meeting. Cargin, who was represented by an attorney, requested a closed session for the review of the matter.
After the council came back into open session, Mick Mallory, council member, called it a shame that the matter should be brought to a vote by the council and criticized the original handling of the matter informally over the phone.
Mallory suggested that the city administrator, mayor and city attorney all resign for misinforming the council.
Mallory was the only negative vote on the motion to affirm Cargin's termination.
