Resignations include music, English teachers

Wednesday, May 31, 2006

The Cherokee School Board approved a series of resignations at the regular meeting on Monday. The resignations include part-time middle school instrumental music teacher Ken Leander, middle school language arts teacher Cindy Taylor, bus driver Richard Bergert, high school secretary Bobbi Heath and several coaching positions.

Superintendent John Chalstrom noted that finding a replacement for the part-time Ken Leander might be difficult. There is an instrumental music teacher, who will teach grade 5-8, Jennifer Dreyer. Leander's position allowed individual music instruction for students in grades 5 and 6. Advertising for the position has begun.

In the case of coaching positions of staff members, acceptance of those resignations are made dependent upon finding suitable replacements. This includes Mollie Loughlin who is the drama coach and some of the coaches of the Future Problem Solvers.

Noel Puffet, resigned as assistant speech director, but she is not a staff member of the district.

All four of the coaches of the Future Problem Solvers have submitted their resignations - Vickie Allbaugh, Pam Wilson, Rebecca Phipps and Lynette Hyndman. The program reportedly does not have as much participation as in the past and the Area Education Agency does not provide the kind of support services for the program as it did in the past.

The board decided to accept the resignations at the Monday meeting and make a decision on whether to discontinue the program at a later date.

The board approved the hiring of Dori Claycamp as food service director.

The board ratified the master working agreement with the union representing support staff. The agreement calls for a 4.5 percent increase in the wage and benefit package.
