Our Opinion: Skate park deserves support

Most of the George Bacon Estate is being used for the Aquatic Center and Gillette Park project, which is as it should be.

George Bacon left a sizable amount of money for the parks and rec department. There was no further restriction on its use. He simply wanted to provide recreational opportunities for young people and families, making the Aquatic Center and Gillette Park project an appropriate designation for the funds.

However it would also be appropriate for a small portion of the George Bacon Estate to be used for a park for skateboarders and in-line skaters.

A location that is suitable for such a park has been found, open to view by passing motorists. Labor and equipment have been pledged to build a skate park and the young people themselves have raised some money. For only $15,000 to $20,000 for material, the city could have an impressive skatepark.

It would be one more recreational asset that would attract people into town rather than something that town people travel elsewhere to find.
