In the first of what is hoped to be an annual event, participation in the Cherokee Exceptional Rodeo was over 50 handicapped individuals, more than the organizers had anticipated.

There were six events for participants at the event held at the Cherokee Arena on Saturday.

The primary organizer was Megan Wiemold of rural Cherokee. Wiemold, who was the 2004 Miss Rodeo Iowa, had seen many such events while she was representing Iowa at rodeo events across the nation.

"This benefits everyone involved - the participants, the volunteers and the community," Wiemold said.

There were plenty of volunteers on hand Saturday to assist with the Exceptional Rodeo. There were Miss Cherokee Rodeo contestants, and rodeo royalty representing other locations, some cowboys who are participants in the PRCA Rodeo, members of an area church, Cherokee Arena board members and others who helped out.

"I'm really pleased with the interest in this event," Wiemold said.
