Board acts on personnel matters

Wednesday, July 12, 2006

The Cherokee School Board approved a resignation and approved contracts for two individuals at the Monday meeting.

Andy Vanfossan has resigned as social studies teacher and head varsity baseball coach, effective after the end of the current baseball season. The family will be returning to the Omaha metropolitan area.

The board approved offering a contract to James DeVos as assistant individual speech director and assistant group speech director.

The board approved a contract for Sue Ann Johnson as eighth grade volleyball coach.

At the request of the superintendent, John Chalstrom, the board approved two district goals for the 2006/07 school year:

* The creation of an instructional environment that will result in increased student achievement.

* The creation of an atmosphere where students, staff and school visitors gain, give and earn respect.

Chalstrom stated that the more goals the district had the less focus each would provide. He said that the suggested goals established a direction without excessive length.

The first is simplified from a previous goal, which referred to "trajectory." The second goal has become a high priority for the district which has started an anti bullying and anti-harassment program.

Barb Radke, elementary principal, reports high attendance at the summer lunch program. She reports that many families are eating together, more than last year, which was the first year of the program.

Students eat free. Adults pay a small charge.

Larry Weede, middle school principal, reports that the middle school is being used quite often this summer by AEA 4 and 12 (being consolidated), basketball and volleyball camps.
