Our Opinion: Good help wanted

Needed: people to work inconvenient hours, earning no money and little gratitude, with potential anger from the people you work for.

Being a school board member is a difficult job but an important one. Elections for school board seats throughout the state will be held on Sept. 12. Nomination petitions can be filed between July 10 and Aug. 3. The petitions can be picked up from the school board secretary.

The number of signatures needed on the petition varies from 10 to 50 depending on the number of voters in the district.

Most districts have school board members, although a few have seven, including Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn. Terms are for three years. The Cherokee District has one board member whose term is up this year. MMC has three terms expiring. River Valley and Aurelia both have two terms expiring.

We hope that we have plenty of candidates for the school board elections. A good election generates interest in the issues that face school districts.
