WHS volleyball team is runner-up
3rd rated Sioux Center beats Cherokee in West tourney
SIOUX CITY - Cherokee's improving volleyball team won three of five matches on the way to a runner-up finish at the rugged Sioux City West Tournament here Saturday.
Cherokee, with limited varsity starting experience on this year's squad, defeated Hinton 21-12, 21-19; West High 21-12, 14-21, 15-10; and Le Mars Gehlen 23-21, 6-21, 15-9; and lost 13-21, 11-21 to Sioux Center in pool play, and then lost 10-21, 11-21 to Sioux Center in the championship match.
For the day, Cherokee served 153-172 for 89 percent and 21 total aces. Sarah Radke led the team in serves with a 33-34 effort and four aces, while Kayla Messerole had 33-35 and three aces, and Lacie Drennan 30-31 and six aces.
Radke also led in sets with 102-107 and 26 assists, while Nicole Hatch was 102-109 with 24 assists, and Kylie Dilla 20-20 and four assists.
Drennan led in spikes with a 53-63 day and 18 kills, followed by Alison Husman 46-60 and 16 kills, Lynn Leonard 38-42 and seven kills, and Messerole 33-42 and 10 kills. Messerole led in blocks with five aces, and Leonard and Drennan recorded two each.
Kelsey Essick tallied 50 digs to lead that department, followed by Husman 31, Radke 29, Drennan 28, and Hatch 26. Essick also led in serve receptions with 95-105, while Husman was 26-30, and Drennan 26-31.
"Sioux Center is an outstanding team and is very deserving of its number three ranking," noted Cherokee coach Curt Klaahsen. "We had a tough time stopping them at the net, and they did a great job of blocking our hitting attempts.
"Over all, though, we were pleased with our play - especially winning two of our matches in the deciding third game."
Cherokee plays in the Spencer Tournament on Saturday.
