AURELIA - The Bulldogs of Coach Tim Ireland lost a hard-fought Northwest Conference volleyball battle to the Schaller-Crestland Wildcats here Thursday night.
Schaller-Crestland took the first two games, 25-23 and 25-2, before the Bulldogs came back to win 25-15 in game three. Game four was another tight one, but the Wildcats prevailed by a final 25-20 count.
Ireland pointed out that the Wildcats outscored the Bulldogs by just a single point, 90- 89, for the entire night, but won three games to their one. The Wildcats, said Ireland, "won all the close ones," and the Bulldogs "just could not finish in the close games."
Ireland said, "We played well against a good team."
Seniors Cassy Smith and Kristine Munden both had 16 kills at the net for the night, and Priscilla Otto and Christa Corderman were the top setters, with Otto having 58 sets - 16 for aces, and Corderman 47 sets - 15 for aces. Senior Corderman also led in blocking for the night, with 13, and Emily Sonksen had 12.
Aurelia's C Team dropped three games to Schaller-Crestland, by scores of 18-21, 20-22, and 15-21, and the junior varsity team also went 0-3 for the night - 17-21, 18-21, and 23-25.
The Aurelia varsity's next match will be Tuesday the Bulldogs play Storm Lake St. Mary's and Alta in a triangular at Alta.
