LeMARS- Coach Kent Bass' River Valley Wolverines took on "a very traditional program with a lot of success under their belt" Friday night when they met the Gehlen Jays here. Coach Bass said the Jays are again a very talented team this year but "I have a hard time believing they are 17 points better than we are." The Jays may not be 17 points better... but on Friday night, they did win the contest against the Wolverines by a 17-0 score.
Coach Bass said, "I felt we were very prepared for Friday night, but we couldn't take advantage of opportunities early in the game and right before halftime. Turnovers and penalties hurt our chances to win- but I'm proud of the way we battled."
Tyler Clark led the Wolverine ground attack Friday with 87 yards on 16 carries. Ethan Byers added another 43 yards on his eight carries. Dylan Rex completed three of nine passes for 40 yards, but had two passes intercepted by Gehlen defenders. The Wolverines' Pat Parcel also intercepted one of Jays' QB Taylor Smith's passes. Smith was 6-13 for 124 yards and one touchdown - a 70-yard play to Tyler Sitzman in the second quarter.
The Wolverine defense was led by Devon Voss with 14 tackles and Ethan Byers with 13.
