At the end of their non-conference match with the Ruthven-Ayrshire Raiders here, the team sang "Happy Birthday" to their coach.
The other present was an impressive 3-0 win over the Raiders. Aurelia's team has just nine players this year, all juniors or seniors, and all members play and contribute to the team's efforts each game. Monday night, the team showed great spirit and hustle in knocking off the Corn Belt Conference team, 25-12, 25- 14, 25-15.
Individual leaders for the Bulldog girls included Cassy Smith with 11 kills, and Kristine Munden with 10. Senior Kayla Ballantyne, who usually doesn't play in the front row, got the first kill of her career, bringing a lot of smiles and congratulations from her teammates and coaches.
Smith and Christa Corderman had two blocks apiece, and Corderman and Priscilla Otto did a nice job setting for the spikes.
Coach Ireland said, "It was a fun night - we won at every level. We got the ball set well, and got a lot of kills. It was a good present for my birthday."
The Bulldogs' record is now 4-7 overall, and 1-3 in the Northwest Conference.
Aurelia also swept the junior varsity match, 21-18, 21-15, 21-8. The "C" team won their match 21-17, 21-16, 16-21.
