SPENCER - The talented Spencer volleyball team put a hurtin' on the streaking Cherokee Washington High club with a 3-0 sweep in Lakes Conference action here Tuesday night.
Playing their second tough Lakes match in as many nights (Cherokee beat Storm Lake Monday night), the WHS lasses could not contain the explosive TIgers on their home court, falling by game scores of 25-17, 25-21, 25-13.
Shauna Drefke led Cherokee in serving with a 10-10 effort and one ace, while Nicole Hatch was 10-11, and Lacie Drennan 8-9 and one ace.
Drennan led her team in spiking with an 18-19 night and seven kills, followed by Kayla Messerole 15-20 and four kills, and Alison Husman 10-12 and three kills. Messerole led in blocks with two aces, while Sarah Radke, Drennan, Heather McCollam, and Lynn Leonard each charted one ace.
Radke paced Cherokee in setting with 21-23 and four assists, whi8le Hatch was 19-21 and five assists, and Kylie Dilla 11-11 and three assists. Kelsey Essick led WHS in digs with 16, while Drennan had seven, and Drefke three.
Essick also led in serve receptions with 29-32, followed by Drennan 6-6, Nancy Perrin 5-7, and Jesselyn Racine 4-4.
"We did not play at a high enough level in all areas to compete with a fine team like Spencer," said Cherokee coach Curt Klaahsen. "We had chances to win the first two games, but couldn't come through when we needed it."
Cherokee hosts defending Lakes Conference champion Hull Western Christian Tuesday night, and hosts Estherville-LC Thursday in further Lakes Conference action.
