Ball control aids 4-1 MMC football team
MARCUS - The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn football Eagles inched out to a 20-0 lead with touchdowns in each of the first three quarters, and then made that stand up for a 20-6 non-district tussle with Woodbine here Friday night.
Mitch Erdmann tallied MMC's first TD in the opening quarter on an 11-yard run. Reliable Kevin Leavitt added the PAT.
Leavitt then trucked in the Eagles' second-quarter TD on an eight-yard scamper, and then added the PAT for a 14-0 MMC lead at halftime. Kyle Kohn then shared the wealth for MMC with a two-yard dash in the third frame to end the Eagle scoring for the night.
Leavitt led the winners in rushing with 22 carries for 87 yards, followed by Erdman 10 hauls for 69 yards, and Kohn 17 carries for 61 yards. MMC rushed for 220 yards in the game, and held Woodbine to 152 yards on 31 rushe attempts.
MMC QB Tim Holmes was 5-6 passing for 63 yards, while Woodbine passed 5-16 for 47 yards. Jerad Letsche was the MMC leading receiver with four catches for 41 yards, and Erdman snagged one for 22 yards.
On defense for the Eagles, Kohn and Tucker Petersen led the way with nine tackles apiece, while Holmes tallied seven, and Chad Alesch five. Jordan Petersen had a QB sack, and teamed with Kohn for another.
"Ås a whole we played pretty well," said first-year MMC coach Brian Williams, who has guided the Eagles to a snazzy 4-1 record so ofar this season. "Our offense was able to move the ball and control the clock.
"At the same time, we made some big mistakes that we need to eliminate as we go down the stretch in district play. A couple penalties at key times cost us points, and we cannot have four fumbles in any game. It's nice to get a victory while making those mistakes, we just have to improve in all areas as we continue the season."
MMC travels to district foe Westwood Friday night.
