Kara Nelson, Iowa's top-ranked Class 2A cross country runner, stayed the course on her home course Tuesday night, winning the girls competition of the annual Cherokee Invitational run on the Cherokee Mental Health Institute Campus.
Nelson clocked a 15:23 in leading her team to a fifth-place finish in the eight-team race.
Talented Spirit Lake Park ran away with the girls team title with 26 points, followed by Hull Western Christian 116, Sheldon 121, Storm Lake 128, Cherokee 132, Le Mars 134, Okoboji 164, and MOC-Floyd Valley 171.
Cherokee's Erica Nicholson finished 12th with a time of 17:31, followed by Ashley Mosbach 36th in 19:21, Amanda Dittmer 41st in 19:28, and Katherine Cook 42nd in 19:32.
Spirit Lake Park also won the boys 10-team competition with 25 points, followed by HWC 65, Sioux Center 79, Storm Lake 94, MOC-FV 125, Sheldon 191, Cherokee 199, Le Mars 225, Sergeant Bluff-Luton 242, and Okoboji 281.
Nate O'Bryan led the Cherokee boys to the tape with a 22nd place finish in a time of 18:52. He was followed by Nick O'Bryan 30th in 19:08, Evan Lundell 40th in 19:41, Brandon Ogren 50th in 20:20, JJ Nitz 57th in 21:04, Everson Siegel 62nd in 21:48, and Zach Mosbach 58th in 21:07.
In boys JV action, Cam Owens placed 43rd in 22:32, followed by Paxton O'Connor 45th in 22:56, Kallyn Buschkamp 55th in 23:55, and Calvin Conley 62nd in 25:10.
In girls middle school division, Krista Nicolaisen clocked a 15:08, Shayla Keyser 15:46, Chyenne Mortenson 17:34, and Abby Hayes 22:55.
There were no JV runners for the Cherokee girls.
The Cherokee squads next run Tuesday in the Lakes Conference Meet in Emmetsburg.
