WHS VB team drops tight 3-1 match

Visiting Estherville-LC eked out an exciting, highly competitive 3-1 victory over Cherokee in Lakes Conference volleyball action here Thursday night.

The loss was a downer for the Washington High club that was celebrating Senior Night and Jam the Gym Night in its final regular-season home match for 2006.

The Midgets won on game scores of 25-22, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23.

Shauna Drefke led Cherokee in serving with a 19-20 night and two aces, while Lacie Drennan was 14-15 with three aces. Kelsey Essick led WHS in serve receptions with a 42-45 effort, followed by Alison Husman 20-22, and Drennan 12-13.

Drennan led Cherokee in spiking with 39-47 and 20 kills, followed by Husman 28-31 and six kills, Lynn Leonard 25-28 and 10 kills, and Kayla Messerole 19-24 and five kills.

Kylie Dilla led the team in setting with a 98-101 effort and 29 assists, while Sarah Radke was 22-22 with four assists. Essick and Husman recorded 20 digs apiece, and Drennan tallied 18.

Leonard had two ace blocks, and Radke and Husman had one ace block each.

"This was a hard-fought match and I compliment E-LC for their fine play," said Cherokee coach Curt Klaahsen. "Their two outside hitters played very well and we had trouble blocking and digging them.

"We played a lot better the last two games, but still didn't play well enough in all areas to win the match."

Cherokee continues Lakes Conference action Tuesday at Sheldon, and Thursday at Spirit Lake.
