EMMETSBURG - Cherokee's brilliant senior runner Kara Nelson ran away from the field to easily win the 2006 girls Lakes Conference cross country meet here Tuesday.
Nelson, also the state's defending Class 2A 3,000 meter champion, clocked a speedy 14:37 to place first and win her seventh of eight XC races she has competed in this record-breaking season.
Estherville-LC-AR and Spirit Lake Park tied for the girls team title with 43 points apiece, followed by Spencer 69, Sheldon 148, Le Mars 155, Hull Western Christian 168, Storm Lake 185, Emmetsburg 196, Cherokee incomplete.
Other finishers for Cherokee in the girls division were Erica Nicholson 18th in 16:41, Katherine Cook 32nd in 17:38, and Amanda Dittmer 52nd in 19:40. Ashley Mosbach did not finish the race.
"Kara was the Lakes Conference champion by a long ways," said Cherokee coach Deb Hankens. "She looked wonderful! Erica Nicholson and Nate O'Bryan put in excellent performances in a very strong conference."
O'Bryan finished 18th in the boys competition with a time of 17:54. He was followed by twin brother Nick O'Bryan 34th in 18:33, Evan Lundell 41st in 19:05, Everson Siegel 46th in 20:05, Zach Mosbach 47th in 20:07, Cam Owens 53rd in 21:01, and JJ NItz 54th in 21:10.
Spirit Lake Park won the boys team title with 36 points, followed by Spencer 47, HWC 65, Storm Lake 114, Sheldon 152, Le Mars 174, Cherokee a86, E-LC 189, and Emmetsburg incomplete.
Cherokee runs tonight at Spencer, and competes in the Class 2A Co-ed District in Orange City on Thursday. Top finishers there will participate in the Boys and Girls State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge on Saturday, October 28.
