PAULLINA - It took five grueling games, but South O'Brien's gritty volleyball team stayed the course to turn back Remsen St. Mary's 3-2 in War Eagle Conference action here last week.
The host Wolverines won on game scores of 25-21, 25-22, 17-25, 18-25, 15-11.
Jill Paulsen led SOS in serving in the match with 23-26 and five aces, followed by Chelsey Ebel 22-22 and one ace, Carrie Egdorf 18-19, Aphton Roberts 17-20 and three aces, and Bridgette Hain 10-11 and one ace.
Roberts paced the winners in serve receptions with 35-36, while Hain was 14-16, and Egdorf 10-12. Ebel totaled 16 assists, and Chelsea Tesch had six.
Paulsen was a force at the net, tallying 55-60 attacks with 17 kills. She was followed by Tara Tewes 33-40 with three kills, Kami Hetletvedt 31-37 and seven kills, Tesch 24-35 and one kill, Ebel 21-23 and one kill, Chelsie Rohrs 13-15, and Lindsay Magnussen 10-12 and one kill. Paulsen also had two ace blocks.
"It was ahard-fought battle," said SOS coach Denise Erdmann. "We made a lot of mental errors in games three and four, but we pulled it together in game five to get the win. Jill had a big night hitting and our defense did a good job of digging the ball. Remsen St. Mary's is a scrappy team and kept the ball in play."
