An Empty Place at the Table

Tuesday, October 24, 2006

Barb Derkson Regional Liaison of the Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault, Mary Meloy of the Cherokee Business & Professional Women and Jule Shulenberg Director of the Cherokee Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault are pictured in the Cherokee County Court House.

The women are pictured in front of the "Empty Place Table" displayed at the court house for the rest of this month.

The empty place at this table is in memory of those who are no longer able to join their family and friends for dinner.

146 Iowans have been killed in domestic violence murders since Jan. 1, 1995. Of those 146 victims, 12 were from inside the eight counties that the Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault (CAASA) serves.

Those Counties include Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Palo Alto, Buena Vista, Cherokee, Sac and Ida.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Please join us in trying to raise awareness about domestic violence and the effects it has on our families and our communities. Take a moment to honor those who can no longer sit at this table.

If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship and you would like help, please call our 24 hour Crisis Line at 1-877-362-4612.
